Switzerland in short The host and winner of the very first ESC and Headquarters of the EBU, Switzerland can be considered the Home of Eurovision.
Unfortunately, Eurovision does not like to go home, and Switzerland has won only once since (in 1988), with several low results before and many more after. Their record gets even worse when foreign artists representing Switzerland are ignored - the last Swiss-born artist to reach the Top 5 was Sandra Studer (aka Simò) in 1991. 2008 Swiss Paolo Meneguzzi, whose name is likely to raise a few laughs in Serbia (and its neighbours), was internally selected with the simple pop ballad Era Stupendo ("It was wonderful"). The song was originally reported to be written by Swedish songwriter Mattias Brånn, but Swiss TV have decided to remove his name from the list for unknown reasons. |
