Macedonia (FYR) in short The Country with the Controversial Name of Macedonia got its name from their Hellenistic king Alexander the Great thousands of years ago. Since then many different tribes and people have emigrated to the region, and currently only a small part of the once very big nation is independent, while the rest is under Greek and Bulgarian sovereignity. The country, with its population of two million people (and another two million names to call it) first entered Eurovision in 1998 with a song in the modern Slavic Macedonian language, after a qualification failure in 1996. In the first few years no successes were registered, but since other Balkan countries started to realize the country is a neighbour, things are looking better. Since 2004 (FYR) Macedonia qualified from each semifinal to the final, but so far they always were pushed back into the semifinal immediately. As long as this tradition won't change we'll see the (FYR) Macedonian entry twice every year.
The best result in a final for the (FY) country was a 12th place for Ninanajna in 2006, by Elena Risteska. 2008 With Ninanajna being their best ever result by a mile (12th compared to their usual 14th), the Macedonians decided to repeat the same style and send Tamara Todevska to Belgrade. |
