United Kingdom in short The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is perhaps the most tragic participant in the Eurovision Song Contest with no less than 15 runner-up results (and five victories to soften things up a bit). In the last decade, however, no-one (with the exception of Jessica Garlick) has managed a top ten result for the UK, and the once tragic 2nd place would now be considered an astronomical success for them.
Thanks to cult status, decent viewing rates and a guaranteed final spot, the UK is likely to stay in the contest regardless of success. 2008 The UK for once forwent the option to send the campest entry to Belgrade, instead choosing Andy Abraham with the unmemorable Even If. The title presumably refers to the fact that even if he wasn't representing the UK, his poor man's You Sexy Thing would still have its bottom 5 place sewn up. |
